Facebook has updated Facebook Groups and added some features.
As Knot , software engineering intern, said on Facebook Blog, they’re transforming Groups to make it easier to communicate with other members and create a smoother experience. However, you have to wait for their global launching because currently, they’re testing it with small percentage of people.
Here is the updated features list:
- Design has been revamped. Groups will have a Wall.
- Added feed of group activities to News Feed (previously only appeared in the group).
- Stay connected with Groups content from your ‘home’. You can ‘follow’ only to most interesting and relevant content from group instead of all Groups’ content.
- Groups and pages look the same, although Groups are for fostering member-to-member collaboration and Pages to broadcast messages to fans.
- Form Group to any kind in your real life: book clubs, sports teams, churches, etc. (It might same with Directory ?!)

Where were you in 90s decade?

First logo
Have you got involved to the internet since then? If it yes, i think Geocities was a something that could be in your site-to-look list like Facebook or Twitter in nowadays.
Geocities gave you online space to put your pictures, document and even your web pages. Together with Angelfire and Tripod, Geocities was one of the biggest ‘online community’ in their era until in 1999, when “DotCom booming” was started and Yahoo bought Geocities for $ 3.6 billion to solidify position as frontrunner in the net.

Late 90s logo
As we know from this link, after ten years, when Facebook and Twitter are leading in ‘online community’ (which is now is called as “Web 2.0″), Yahoo decided to close Geocities start on October 26, 2009. I think it’s not really surprised news since who does really care with Geocities? People who was geeky on it, i think has moved to their personal hosting just to make their website online or just enjoy their time and being socialized with their friends on social medias such as Twitter, facebook and etc.
The point of closing of Geocities is that there is an era for everything even on the internet. It’s very cliche, isnt it?

But unfortunately that’s true! There’s always a starting point, and there would be a time to finish, to close. Start from this thing, i think you will agree with me, even Facebook or Twitter, will have finished, it’s only a matter of time. Be prepared person for every possibility that could happen in the future and be ready to accept for every new good things in technology and forget the past because there is nothing that will have no end!

As reported by CNET, Facebook confirmed on Monday afternoon that there have been problems that saw log-in credentials turned down, status messages eaten up, and other various unpleasant occurrences over the course of the past few days. And the bad news is, they hasn’t yet disclosed the source of the problem and of course need more time to fix and resolve these issues.

Using OAuth, open authentication technology, MySpace now enable to sync with Twitter.
Any status that created on MySpace will appear in Twitter feed and vice versa.
Here is the list of new features:
- Status updates synced from MySpace to Twitter and vice versa
- Updates originating from MySpace will be noted as such on Twitter and vice versa
- Status syndication can be enabled for one-way or two-way
- When updates post to Twitter, readers have a link back to MySpace to make commenting easy
- Enables on-the-go status syncing (for Twitter and MySpace Mobile – WAP and apps)
- Open authentication technology (OAuth) protects account credentials and data shared between sites
The thing that maybe interesting is what Sharon Nguyen, Senior Product Manager, said on MySpace blog:
At MySpace, we believe in open content distribution and want to help users socialize around content in many different places. Your status update is a quick way to tell friends what you’re up to, or in to. Our new sync functionality is part of an ongoing effort to make it simple for people to share their status beyond MySpace and allow friends and followers to interact with that content Web-wide.
Content sharing is the key how to win in this era, web 2.0 era!

Now, i understand why there is so many offices and schools restrict Facebook on their network.
Please look at Nielsen’s table below. Although only gain #4 of biggest site with unique audience, Facebook is on the top
rank of Internet’s ultimate time waster. Averagely, user spent 5 hours, 46 minutes and 4 seconds per month. It’s 2
hours longer than Yahoo’s users that only have 3:14:30.

I’m not really surprised with this thing because as we know Facebook is growing community with lots of applications and thousands user-generated contents. But, the fact that visitor only spent 1:17:20 on Youtube, it was really made me shocked!
The other thing that i interested is about Google.
They’ve got 149.673.000 unique visitor (#1 position) but only 1:53:21 for time per person that spent on it. However, it’s good indicator for Google because of their philosophy, “may be the only people in the world who can say our goal is to have people leave our homepage as quickly as possible.”

Microsoft is making a limited preview of Office Web Apps, as introduction for Office 2010, and for more widely-available beta of Web Apps will arrive this fall. I’ve got this information from ReadWriteWeb.
And here is the summary.
Word:
- Sharing capability is a big improvement.
- Users have to install Silverlight for zooming in and out.
Excel:
- Lightweight version of ‘desktop’ Excel.
- Charting feature not included.
Powerpoint:
- Slide decks are not available.
- Allow full editing for anyone.
All of them will be embeded on Internet Explorer, the native browser from Microsoft. And i think, this is just the begining of how Microsoft, Google Docs and any other vendors that develop Web-based Spreadsheet processor will do anything to engage loyal users.

But i’m not sure that Bing will defeat Google in the near future, Bing have to prove that this increase is not coming from Bing new features tester but from their loyal visitors.
Another search engine that growing fast although not as fast as Bing is AOL with 333.231 (in thousands) searches and gain 1.8%.

ReCAPTCHA ,one of the biggest “captcha” free service, acquired by Google. In the future, Google will use ReCAPTCHA technology to improve Google Book Search’s digitizing accuracy which means ReCAPTCHA technology will be used to recognize scanned materials in Google Books and Google News Archive Search as plain text.
“Having the text version of documents is important because plain text can be searched, easily rendered on mobile devices and displayed to visually impaired users.” Will Cathcart, Google Product Manager.
So, that’s a brilliant idea and good movement not as simply as I thought before that Google only needs to grab reCAPTCHA in every Blogspot pages to avoid spammer :))
