Bing’s Translator, translate your page on the spot

October 16, 2009 Leave a comment

There is another good news that posted by Vikram Dendi, Senior Product Manager, Microsoft Research on Bing Community Blog.

Two days ago (14/October) they released Translator, translation widget that can be easily installed on your webpage. It had been eight months since the Microsoft Research Team worked hardly and hopefully Translator would be a good competitor for Website Translator Gadget from Google Translate. To be honest, Translator from Bing convinced me because i dont need to worry that my visitors would jump to translator page. Translator renders page that need to be translated on the spot, on our page.

The installation of Translator is not a big effort at all.
All you need is just go to their website, customize your widget and once you click ‘Generate Code’, Bing will deliver Javascript snippet code to you. Put the code to your html document and that’s it!

Here are the features (as far as i know):

  • Languages: Arabic, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese,Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Thai.
  • Hovering over translated sentences will display tool tips that show the original source sentence.
  • Share link to the translated pages.
  • Customizable

Limited Preview of Microsoft Office Web Apps 2010

September 17, 2009 Leave a comment

Microsoft is making a limited preview of Office Web Apps, as introduction for Office 2010, and for more widely-available beta of Web Apps will arrive this fall. I’ve got this information from ReadWriteWeb.

And here is the summary.

Word:

  • Sharing capability is a big improvement.
  • Users have to install Silverlight for zooming in and out.

Excel:

  • Lightweight version of ‘desktop’ Excel.
  • Charting feature not included.

Powerpoint:

  • Slide decks are not available.
  • Allow full editing for anyone.

All of them will be embeded on Internet Explorer, the native browser from Microsoft. And i think, this is just the begining of how Microsoft, Google Docs and any other vendors that develop Web-based  Spreadsheet processor  will do anything to engage loyal users.

Superview, IE6 – IE8 Cross Browser Tester

September 16, 2009 2 comments

Microsoft, through Expression Web Team has created an interesting tool, Superview.
I really interesting with this because it such a very helpful tool so that you dont need to downgrade your Internet Explorer or buy some cheap netbook and get installed IE-6 there just to make sure that your HTML and CSS ”properly loaded’ on there or not.  Superview helps us, web developer, to performing cross browser debugging across Internet Explorer, including versions 6,7 and 8.

Captured from Superview and .... ooppsss there is bug from my site opened on IE 6!!! :p

I’ve tried to download Superview installer and already installed in my computer but i think i need more time to learn and explore deeply on this one. But from my very early experiment, Superview loads screen captured image instead of open page directly.

Alternatively, you can use IE Tester, free software that can be downloaded here and has range from IE 5.5 – IE 8 or try ‘old trick’ from Tredosoft.

New Visual Search by Bing

September 14, 2009 1 comment

Bing released new Visual Search feature.
“It’s a new way to formulate and refine your search queries through imagery…” said Todd Schwartz on Bing’s blog.
They called this feature Data Groupings Galleries. You can use this ‘nice feature’ to search Product, Books, Movies and Cars.

You need to install Silverlight and just simply go to This URL

Update: unfortunately, i cant open that URL, here is captured from my screen.

Anyone has different ‘story” than me?

I’ll be back to write further information about this feature when it can be loaded properly.

Internet Explorer Program Management has released guidelines for Internet Explorer add-on developers.
“This is respond to demand from the developer community and to help share the thinking of the IE team, gathered from years of providing support to users and developers.” said Frank Olivier and Herman Ng in IEBlog.

And, here are the core aspect of guidelines:

  • Do not limit the user’s ability to access Internet Explorer features
  • Do not limit the user’s ability to control Internet Explorer settings
  • Only use supported APIs

You can find and download IE add-ons from here.
